On a fateful Sunday afternoon, with sirens wailing, Oren Katz, a generous father of four, went to secure the reinforced door of a neighborhood bomb shelter. Little did he know that this act of kindness would be his last. As he approached the entrance, an Iranian missile struck the shelter directly, claiming his life. His wife, Samadi, mourned his loss, saying, "Even in times of trouble, you always gave, and that giving took your life."
Katz was one of nine victims, including four teenage children, in an attack that has shaken Israel to its core. The Biton family lost three of their children: Sarah, 13, Avigail, 15, and their brother Yaakov, 16. Another young life taken was that of 16-year-old Gabriel Baruch Revah.
The force of the explosion was so powerful that it completely destroyed the synagogue above the shelter, leaving the protective roof caved in. Miraculously, much of the structure remained intact despite its age and the intensity of the strike, according to an officer leading the search and rescue mission.
Lieutenant Colonel Oded Revivi described the scene as horrific, with survivors fleeing from two massive fires and a wide radius of debris. He emphasized that despite the severity of the attack, most of the people in the bomb shelter survived. "In a situation like this, with such a severe impact, it's a miracle that so many came out alive," he said.
The attack in Beit Shemesh, a quiet town near Jerusalem, has instilled widespread fear. Nissim Edri, a community leader, lost childhood friends in the strike, and the experience has left him shaken. When sirens sounded the following morning, disrupting funerals, mourners sought shelter, some even hiding behind walls. Edri, who lives near the impact site, froze in fear, remembering his friends who had perished.
Revivi urged Israelis to utilize their shelters, acknowledging that while the Beit Shemesh shelter failed partially, it still saved many lives. He emphasized that no shelter can provide absolute security at all times, especially when faced with modern weaponry.
David Azulai, whose family was saved by a safe room in their house, described the explosion as immense, shaking their shelter and leaving their car in flames. Despite the destruction, Azulai expressed gratitude that it was their belongings and not their lives that were lost. However, his children are struggling with the trauma, afraid whenever they hear the sirens.
Beit Shemesh, once a relatively unknown town, has now become a symbol of the war's impact. Its residents, who had followed government orders to take shelter, never expected such a direct hit. The town had previously experienced minor incidents during the Hamas-led attacks in 2023, but nothing compared to this devastating attack.
