The government has unveiled a list of 33 questions to be asked in the first phase of the census, sparking curiosity and potential controversy. But what's the big deal?
Starting April 1st, the initial phase will focus on creating a comprehensive household list, with a 30-day campaign in each state and union territory. This phase will continue until September 30th. Census officers will gather information about the ownership status of homes, their usage, the materials used for floors and roofs, the number of rooms, and the gender of the head of the family.
Here's where it gets interesting: officers will then inquire about the household's usage, condition, and the number of members. But the questions don't stop there. Citizens will also be asked about the basic amenities available in their homes, such as the primary source of drinking water, lighting, toilet availability and type, waste disposal, bathing facilities, kitchen availability, LPG and PNG connections, and the main fuel used for cooking.
And this is the part most people miss—the census workers will also collect data on gadgets like radios, televisions, internet access, laptops, computers, telephones, mobile phones, and smartphones. They will inquire about vehicle types, the main grain consumed in the household, and even request a mobile number for census-related communication. The government is also offering a unique option for citizens to self-enumerate within 15 days before the 30-day household listing campaign begins.
The census is a two-part process: the household listing and housing census from April to September, followed by the enumeration of individuals in February 2027.
