Russia Unleashes Oreshnik Ballistic Missile on Ukraine: Kyiv & Lviv Under Attack (2026)

Oreshnik Ballistic Missile Strikes Ukraine: A Complex and Controversial Conflict

The Oreshnik ballistic missile, a formidable weapon with a range of up to 5,500km, has been deployed by Russia in a series of overnight strikes on Ukraine, causing widespread destruction and casualties. This is only the second time Moscow has used this missile, which was first deployed in Dnipro in November 2024. The strike, which occurred on Thursday night, resulted in four fatalities and 25 injuries in Kyiv, with loud booms and explosions lighting up the sky for several hours.

The Russian Defense Ministry claims the attack was a response to a Ukrainian drone attack on Vladimir Putin's residence in late December, an accusation Kyiv denies. However, the ministry did not specify the Oreshnik's target, but videos emerged shortly after midnight (22:00 GMT) showing explosions in the western city of Lviv, confirming a ballistic missile strike on infrastructure.

The Oreshnik missile is an intermediate-range, hypersonic ballistic missile with a unique warhead design. It deliberately fragments during its descent, creating multiple, independent inert projectiles that cause distinctive repeated explosions. This strike, close to EU and NATO borders, has raised concerns about European security and tested the transatlantic community's resolve.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the strike was a response to Putin's 'hallucinations' regarding the alleged drone attack. The EU and Donald Trump have cast doubt on the strike's occurrence, and as the conflict continues, Ukraine's targeting of power plants has become a recurring theme. During the attack on Kyiv, more than a dozen missiles and hundreds of drones were deployed, resulting in a 'double-tap' hit that killed a paramedic and damaged apartment buildings.

The conflict's impact extends beyond Ukraine, as Russian regions like Belgorod experienced power outages due to Ukrainian shelling of infrastructure. Additionally, a Ukrainian strike on a Russian power plant in Oryol affected water and heating systems, highlighting the complex and interconnected nature of this war.

This incident raises questions about the effectiveness and consequences of such military actions, inviting further discussion and analysis.
