In a poignant and heartbreaking statement, Becca Good, the partner of Renee Nicole Good, spoke out one month after Renee was tragically shot and killed by an immigration officer in Minneapolis. She condemned the federal government’s aggressive immigration enforcement actions that led to this devastating loss and called on the city to remember the countless individuals whose names often go unrecognized.
Becca, in a rare public address facilitated through her attorney, expressed gratitude towards the community, stating, "I am so proud to call Minneapolis my home." However, she did not shy away from criticizing the federal operation that not only took the life of her partner but also claimed the life of another individual, ICU nurse Alex Pretti, aged 37.
"Renee was not the first person to lose her life to this violence, and she certainly will not be the last," Becca emphasized. "You know my wife’s name and you know Alex’s name, but there are many others in this city who are suffering and whose families are in pain just like mine—even if they don’t resemble my family."
She continued, highlighting the shared humanity of those affected, saying, "These individuals are our neighbors, friends, coworkers, and classmates. We must strive to know their names too, because this tragedy should never happen to anyone."
Since Renee’s death on January 7, Becca has rarely spoken publicly. The incident occurred shortly after the Trump administration deployed an additional 3,000 immigration agents to the Twin Cities as part of what was termed Operation Metro Surge. This operation intensified following renewed scrutiny from right-wing commentators over a state fraud investigation involving Somali nationals.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, over 4,000 undocumented immigrants have been apprehended since the operation commenced in December. This initiative has sparked near-daily protests across the Twin Cities and has significantly altered the daily lives of residents, prompting many to volunteer their time to help deliver groceries to undocumented immigrants and protect their neighborhoods from immigration enforcement agents.
Despite requests for comment, a representative from the DHS did not immediately respond. Tragically, in the weeks following Good’s killing, Alex Pretti was also shot and killed by Customs and Border Protection agents. Initial responses from officials in the Trump administration defended these agents, with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem labeling Pretti a "domestic terrorist." However, shortly after, the administration announced plans to reduce its operations in Minnesota, including the withdrawal of 700 agents.
While the Justice Department has opened a federal civil rights investigation into Pretti’s death, they have yet to do the same for Renee Good. In her heartfelt statement, Becca Good remarked, "Renee and I chose to embrace kindness. We firmly believed every single life deserves equal care, respect, and dignity, regardless of their background or appearance. This principle should not be viewed as radical; if it is, then I envision our family being remembered for embodying radical kindness every day."
The fatalities have sparked urgent calls for reform within the DHS and even prompted demands for Secretary Noem to resign. During a recent public forum, two of Renee Good's brothers addressed lawmakers, expressing their distress regarding the violent methods employed by the DHS.
"The profound sorrow our family feels due to Nee’s loss in such a violent and senseless manner is compounded by disbelief and a desperate yearning for change," testified Luke Ganger, one of her brothers.
