In an exhilarating turn of events at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, Patrick Reed has widened his lead to a commanding four strokes as he heads into the final round, while Rory McIlroy's chances of winning appear to diminish significantly.
As the third round unfolded on Saturday, Reed entered with a slim one-shot advantage but faced early difficulties, achieving only a level par after mixing two bogeys with two birdies in his initial six holes. However, he soon regained his composure, showcasing his skills by notching up five additional birdies without any further setbacks at the Emirates Golf Club, ultimately solidifying his position in the tournament.
Norwegian golfer Viktor Hovland made a remarkable leap by delivering the best round of the day, shooting an impressive seven-under-par 65. This performance allowed him to close the gap to within five strokes of Reed. Hot on his heels is Spain's David Puig, who is just one shot behind Reed, positioning himself firmly in second place.
On the other hand, Rory McIlroy struggled to find his rhythm throughout the round. Despite managing just two birdies, he ended the day with a score of 71, leaving him trailing a substantial eleven shots behind Reed.
Starting the day one stroke shy of Reed, England's Andy Sullivan also faced challenges, finishing tied with Hovland in third place after posting a score of 71. Meanwhile, Italian golfers Francesco Molinari and Andrea Pavan both concluded their rounds at eight-under par, yet neither could capitalize on their advantageous starts, each recording a score of 71.
Reflecting on his performance, Reed expressed to Sky Sports Golf, "I was able to stabilize my game early in that round and salvaged a couple of under-par scores on the front nine, which set me up nicely to attack the par fives."
He added, "Once I got halfway through the front nine, my swing felt really solid, boosting my confidence to go out and take on the course."
Notably, Reed is currently competing on the LIV Golf tour, making the opportunity to secure world ranking points in this tournament particularly crucial for him. He emphasized, "While gaining world ranking points is vital, the most important thing for me is to secure a victory here. I came close two years ago, and I'm looking forward to playing some strong golf to give myself a chance. No matter how large your lead might be, closing out a tournament is always challenging. I'm ready for that challenge and will approach tomorrow as if everyone is at even par, aiming to win the day."
McIlroy, despite his struggles, managed to par every hole on the front nine before finally sinking a birdie at the par-five 10th hole. However, he could only manage one more birdie at the 14th before a disappointing three-putt on the final green cost him dearly.
