In a bold move that underscores their commitment to defensive excellence, the Minnesota Vikings have officially announced an extension of Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores’ contract. This decision not only reflects confidence in Flores’ capabilities but also highlights the significant improvements witnessed in the team’s defense under his leadership.
During the three seasons from 2023 to 2025, Flores has skillfully guided the Vikings' defense, managing to restrict opponents to an average of just 19.2 points per game, which ranks as the second-lowest across the entire league. Additionally, the team has effectively limited rivals to 317.1 yards per game, achieving an impressive average of 5.1 yards per play, placing them fourth in that statistic. Notably, the rushing defense has also shone brightly, allowing only 105.4 yards per game—fifth best in the league—while maintaining a remarkable low of 3.9 yards per rush, which is the best in the NFL since Flores took the helm.
The Vikings' defensive unit has made a name for itself by forcing 52 fumbles—the second-most in the NFL—and recording 73 takeaways, ranking fifth overall. This includes an astonishing 61 fumble recoveries and 43 interceptions, showcasing a relentless effort to disrupt opposing offenses. Furthermore, in terms of preventing big plays, Minnesota has allowed only 147 plays of 20 or more yards over the past three years, the fewest in the league during Flores’ tenure.
Head Coach Kevin O'Connell praised Flores, stating, "Brian has a unique ability to connect with players, understand their skill sets, and put them in positions to maximize their impact on the field. The identity of our defense reflects his leadership and preparation. Personally, I have greatly valued the relationship we've built over the last three years; that trust, alignment, and high standard are crucial for our continued success."
Since Flores joined the Vikings, the defense has seen a remarkable turnaround. When he arrived, they were ranked a dismal 31st overall at the end of the 2022 season. Under his guidance, the unit improved to 16th place in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons, culminating in a commendable third-place finish in 2025, yielding only 282.6 yards per game. This performance was only outdone by Houston and Denver, who allowed 277.2 and 278.2 yards, respectively.
In 2025, Flores’ defense achieved the second-fewest passing yards allowed per game in the NFL, with an average of 158.5 yards, trailing only Buffalo. This accomplishment marked the Vikings’ best performance in this category since 1989. The team was particularly formidable in the red zone, allowing just 2.11 yards per play—the second lowest in the league—while holding opposing teams to touchdowns on only 42.9% of their red-zone drives, again the second-best figure in 2025.
Recognized for his efforts, Flores was a finalist for The Associated Press Assistant Coach of the Year in 2024, a season that saw the Vikings achieve a stunning 14-3 record and secure a playoff position—marking the second-highest number of wins in the team's history. During that year, the Vikings led the league with 24 interceptions and 95 passes defensed, while also excelling in limiting opponents’ fourth-down conversions to just 37.1%. Notably, despite having 14 players new to the active roster in 2024, the defense still managed to rank second in opponent scoring efficiency and limited rushing yards to 93.5 per game.
Remarkably, the Vikings maintained a streak of forcing a takeaway in every regular-season game of 2024, setting a franchise record for consecutive games with a takeaway in a single season. This consistent performance positioned them as the only team in the NFL to achieve a takeaway in every game. Their 24 interceptions were five more than any other team, solidifying their defensive prowess with the second-highest total of interceptions in a season since 2000.
Thanks to Flores’ strategic oversight, three Vikings defenders earned selections to the 2025 NFL Pro Bowl: outside linebackers Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel, along with cornerback Byron Murphy Jr.—all making their first Pro Bowl appearances. Greenard and Van Ginkel finished strong, ranking fifth and eighth in sacks, respectively, while Murphy recorded six interceptions, tying for third in the NFL and becoming the first Vikings cornerback to achieve such a feat since 1998. Van Ginkel’s outstanding performance also earned him a spot on the AP All-Pro Second Team.
In his inaugural season with the Vikings, Flores witnessed his defense lead the league in forced fumbles, with an astounding 21—three more than any other team, marking the highest total of forced fumbles in a single season for the franchise since 2007.
